Most importantly, I’m a dad to two wonderful kids!

This year I won the Seattle International Veterans Cup for fencers 40 and over and I finished 3rd at the National Championships for fencers 50-59.

I started fencing at the University of Michigan in 1991. My only regret is I didn’t start younger! I moved to Portland after graduation to continue fencing. I trained with multiple local Olympians including Michael Marx, Bob Marx, Weston Kelsey and Cody Mattern. I did not make the Olympic team myself but in 2004 I finished 3rd at the US National Championships.

I took a ten year break from fencing and instead trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I won the blue belt over-30 middle-weight division at the Oregon Open 2017 (at 43). I received my brown belt in 2024. Fencing and BJJ couldn’t be more different when it comes to the range they’re fought at, but one thing they have in common is that students are frequently distracted by wanting to learn new moves instead of practicing when to execute the moves they already know. Quite literally, timing is everything!
